Season 1, Episode 11: "Lock n' Load Revolution"

CNN is covering an explosion in Roanapur that killed several people. What a wonderful way to start your morning--a bowl of Rick Krispies, and a snap, crackle, kaboom.

Rock wakes Revy up from her beauty sleep, not even giving a damn that she's practically naked. All that's different is she has her butt crack showing--nothing unusual from her typical attire. He pushes aside a bra hanging from an assault rifle to tell her to get the hell up. They've got a new mission from triad boss, Mr. Chang.

Is that Revy's bra hanging off the rifle? I know, dumb question as there's only one girl in a house with three men, but she never wears one. Perhaps it's only reserved for "special" occasions, or maybe there's some of those Roanapur prostitutes running in and out of there. But in Revy's room? Revi could be bisexual--or maybe it's best not to question it. Revy never liked talking about her past, so it's a safe bet she wouldn't want to discuss her undergarments.

The bones of the background information is this: Chang got a guy who gave up documents against the U.S. government. He tried to sell them back but they decided, instead, to blow up the embassy and Chang's office. This guy wasn't very smart, because he didn't heed Mr. Chang's warnings. So when the guy was caught selling guns on the street like he was running a "hot dog stand," he got the hell beaten out of him so hard, Satan was wincing in pain. I have no sympathy.

Chang has been hired by the U.S. government to return the documents, and it's up to Black Lagoon to do it. He comes up with a plan to hire five boats to make it more difficult for the enemies to figure out which one has the documents. It's basically like playing cups, but instead of just getting air, they get a bullet to the artery if they guess incorrectly.

At that moment, Revy peeks out the window just as the enemies launch a grenade right at the window of Chang's alternate office. Luckily (and for the sake of the plot), everyone dodges major injuries, and the enemies begin to raid the building. Chang and Revy dual-pistol their way out, all while Chang escorts Black Lagoon to their boat.

We flip over to two main bad guys of the arc--commies Takenaka and Ibraha. Takenaka is an atheist who doesn't have the passion for his cause anymore, but still has a tactical mind. Ibraha is a passionate spokesman who doesn't care for Takenaka's attitude whatsoever. Ibraha gets word that Black Lagoon was spotted, and they plan accordingly.

Takenaka heads to the airport to confront Black Lagoon, making small-talk with a Japanese man while waiting to board. The Japanese man is so sure he has met Takenaka before, and his institution is correct because Takenaka was (and still is) wanted for terrorism.

I seriously feel like this show is one big smoking ad.
So, is the Japanese man a cop who attempted to arrest Takenaka? Perhaps that's why Takenaka is so familiar-looking, which is why we get the imagery of his wanted poster on the wall of the police station. Can you inagine the Japanese man sitting on the plane after a few hours and going, "Oh, shit, son. I just bummed a light off a wanted terrorist!"

Black Lagoon is being followed. Naturally, they would be. It makes me wonder why they don't travel by submarine or hitch a ride on a cruise ship to make themselves inconspicuous.

The bad guy predicts the path Black Lagoon was going to take. Now, only Rock and Revy are going, to minimize the risk of losing the entire crew. Chang left a note for Revy, which Dutch gives to her as Revy spouts her greedy ideology. Rock and Revy successfully leave in the escape boat, leaving the boat from a distance. Takenaka still believes they're coming. What a cocky bastard.

Rock and Revy land, and travel through the near-empty village. These are the effects of guerrilla warfare. And so, their "getaway" ride shows up, or does it?

In the car is our favorite terrorist. Revy discovers pretty quickly that Takenaka isn't the getaway driver, due to two major clues: the guard is taking a "bathroom break," and Takenaka is too casual with Revy. A real getaway driver wouldn't want to sit there and chit-chat when work has to be done--he'd get their names, pop the door, and they'd drive off.

Turns out the note from Chang was actually the new codeword--some proverb about killing. Revy introduces herself with a fake identity, a slow build-up to Takenaka and Revy raising their guns at each other.

Takenaka's gunman kidnaps Rock, documents and all, because he just cannot run away fast enough. Damnit, Rock! You had one job!

You think Revy also saw this hooligan hiding in the back seat?
We meet the real getaway driver, "More Stoned than the Blarney" Leigharch--and his guard, Shenhua. They arrive to pick up Revy right as she's dodging bullets left, right, up, and down.

Shenhua asks where the other three members of Black Lagoon are, and Revy mentions that plans have changed, including Rock being captured. Shenhua laughs at Rock being so stupid.

Shenhua and Leigharch plan to take Revy back to the base so they can get paid and go home, but Revy's like, "I ain't going there. Rock has the documents," and that's where we hear Revy call Shenhua by her famous nickname--Chinglish--because of her over-the-top accent and short, choppy sentences. It's also funny because Shenhua is actually Taiwanese--and greatly offended by Revy's nickname for her. Ehh, it's still funny.

Revy throws out a good point that Shenhua and Leigharch weren't hired just to be Revy's chauffeur--they need to get those documents back, otherwise Chang will be skinning all three of their asses for being so damn incompetent.

Meanwhile...

The episode ends with Rock in an interrogation with the terrorist trying to butter him up to get the info he needs. Oh, and by the way, the briefcase is empty.

OVERALL:

Story - While there's nothing particularly special or unique about this plot, it does end on an interesting cliffhanger. What happened to the documents?

3 / 5

Character Development - None is shown here, but there is a build-up to one that will not be revealed until a future episode in this arc.

2 / 5

Badassery - Shenhua. Anyone that threatens Revy--and gets away with it--is totally badass in my book. Only Balalaika and Dutch are the only ones who can tell Revy what to do. Though I think Revy might be holding back with Shenhua because she has to, otherwise she wasted her getaway ride because of a petty argument.

5 / 5

Best Insult: (Revy, about Rock after being captured): "Stupid shit-for-brains Rock. Goddamn him."

Out-of-Context: "Maybe you would like for me to skin your ass, bitch."
